Here in the Midwest, the light of day is getting shorter, the temperature is getting cooler, that white stuff falls from the sky….and maybe if you are like me….. the feeling of dread knowing that winter is on it’s way. For some, winter means a feeling of sadness and an increase in depression for several reasons. Could be the lack of sunshine, staying inside more and feeling cooped up, or maybe sadness with memories of holidays gone by.

If you find yourself feeling a little low with the upcoming change of season, here are a few tips to cope with the winter blues:
1. Vitamin D3 – we usually get Vitamin D3 from sun, so when we are outside less and the sun does not shine as much. Vitamin D3 affects your mood by improving your sense of well-being.

2. Phillips Golite sunlamp – available on Amazon for about $120 and replicates the effects of sunlight and treats SAD seasonal affective disorder; use 15 minutes a day.

3. Don’t fight it – rest, go to bed early, don’t over do yourself and say no to activities to take care of yourself

4. Warm food – use your crock pot and find a few comfort foods including soups

5. Go outside – don your snow-pants and get some fresh air. Take a hike, go ice skating, skiing, sledding

6. Comedy – watch a funny movie, stand-up comedy. Laughing strengthens your immune system, boosts your energy, decreases pain, and protects you from the effects of stress

7. Move everyday – hit the gym or take a class to consistently move your body. Exercise also increases your energy and metabolizes the stress hormones in your body.

8. Wear great looking vibrant colors and fitted winter clothes so you don’t feel dumpy.

9. Stay connected to your circle of people and ask for support if needed

10. Take a vacation in a sunny location if it’s an option for you, even if it’s only where it’s a few degrees warmer than where you live. the temperature in Texas is much warmer than Nebraska in the winter time.

I hope these few tips are helpful for you to get through the darker, cooler, winter months!
